Some of the students that we spoke to said to us

  • Padova is a safe city, there is CCTV everywhere and we feel safe

  • Padova is not expensive and we can afford to study and live away from home

  • It is one of the best universities in Italy

  • A Padova university degree is very attractive to employers

  • We do not need a car as every faculty is concentrated in the city centre

  • Padova can be reached easily from cities with the train

  • Padova attracts students from all over the world – it has an international feel

  • We feel that we are here to exchange ideas and the atmosphere is very open to that

  • We are proud that the university has leading professors from around Italy and the world

  • The university hospital is the best in Italy

  • I am from Milan, though I prefer Padova as it is more ‘human sized’

Why Padova?

The city with a meadow without grass?

A Saint without a name?

A Café without doors?

Europa Student Housing Company chose Padova after a lot of thought and for very good reasons.

  • We love being less than 30 minutes from Venice

  • We like being able to get to Milan in just two hours

  • We love being able to get to Bologna in 30 minutes

  • We like being able to get to Rome in, well, three hours

Most of all, when we set up our business in Italy, we spent a lot of time in many different cities.   We wanted a base that has some of the following features.

  • A prestigious university.  That was a tough one, as Italy has so many prestigious universities, many of which are the oldest in the world!

  • Plenty of students!   Another tough one as Italy has many cities that have plenty of students, but we loved Padova because it has 65,000 or so students in one of the most impressive city centres in all of Italy!

  • Most of all the students that we spoke to convinced us!

The Café Without Doors

No, not something from Alice Through the Looking Glass.

Café Pedrocchi does have doors.   It is old though, started in 1771 by Francesco Pedrocchi (he was from Bergamo).

Café Pedrocchi is a haven for students, always has been.  One of its main rooms (you will have to come and find out which) was open all night, and let students from afar lay down there books and sleep.

Byron had a quick coffee there, as did Stendahl and many other famous writers, artists and musicians.

A meadow without grass. Right?

Well, more of a piazza really...

...but quite a big one.

Prato della Valle at 90,000 square metres is Italy's largest city square.

It used to be a swamp, just outside of the city walls.  Then, in the 1770's a bunch of Venetian nobles got together and decided to do something about it.   Maybe they were fed up with the mosquitoes.

Today the Padovans still call it Il Prato, 'the meadow'.  You'll have to judge for yourselves if you agree.

We certainly have never seen a meadow anything quite like it.

And a Saint without a name.  Correct?

Shhhh!  Actually, he was called Anthony of Padova, or Anthony of  Lisbon, where he originally came from.

The Basilica of St Anthony is a short walk from Prato della Valle.

We can't say anymore than that...
